| A resident of Searsmont, Edith La Roche received an Associate's degree in Fine Arts at Junior College, but considers herself mainly self-taught as an artist. During many years of raising children and employment in other fields she did little painting, but found art a consuming interest and joy throughout her life.
According to Edith, "I have since tried many media; constructions using found materials, acrylics, pastels and watercolors, to name a few. In recent years, painting with Stell's group has been a learning experience and a great pleasure." Edith has not only displayed her paintings at the Searsmont Library, but has arranged and hung numerous art exhibitions for the facility.
Her paintings often feature rural scenes and familiar objects found in the countryside. Among Edith's favorite subjects are geese, ducks and her own chickens, each of whom bears a special name and a displays a distinct personality. However, these feathered friends are often cagey; recently the baby hens she had named with girls' names suddenly developed pronounced crowing abilities and she found that they were, after all, roosters, born in what was considered a "good year for chickens."
Edith's work is represented in private collections in Maine, New York, Vermont and in France.
